Behind the pledge: Javarius Leamon

Javarius Leamon

With Dabo Swinney watching, Javarius Leamon takes on undersized Byrnes end Doc Dillard in what was the most entertaining competition during Clemson's two weeks of camp.

Clemson's newest offensive lineman commitment sheds light on when momentum swayed in the Tigers favor.

He is ranked a 4-star by 247 and a 3-star by rivals and scout. IMO both scout and rivals have him ranked that way because of grade concerns. As a player he is probably closer to a mid to high 4-star.

    • This is sorta one of my pet peeves about the recruiting ranking process in general.

Almost everyone factors academics in there.

But it's their perception or informed speculation about one's grades. We don't have kids' transcripts, nor are we qualified to project what courses the NCAA will accept.

You hear from sources you trust -- college or high school coaches -- that certain kids are borderline or have no shot to make it. But I've witnessed way too many cases where those kids wind up qualifying. Or vice versa, where some kids wind up not qualifying, but academics weren't factored in their rankings.

IMO, it's too much of an unknown variable to factor academics in. Andre Branch was rated really low back in the day because he wasn't expected to qualify. Now those rankings look absurd. I'd rather be able to look back in 4 years and say "Well, so-and-so was a top-5 in-state player, but he fell off the map when he didn't qualify" than have my actual ranking lose credibility because we thought he might not qualify and he actually did. Or he didn't, went to prep school and came back a stud a year later.

IMO, Leamon is a four-star talent who should be classified as such. If he has to go to prep school, does that make him any less a four-star talent?

No service wants their lists topped by a cast of juco-bound players, I understand. I just don't know that you can equally factor in academics across the rankings board.
