Balls and strikes...
Clemson whips Georgia Southern in game 1.
Clemson, SC— Daniel Gossett pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball and finished with a season high 12 strikeouts to propel Clemson to a 7-1 victory over Georgia Southern Friday night.
Clemson (35-15) grabbed the lead in the first inning and never looked back. Maleeke Gibson began the inning with a leadoff walk and stole second. After Steve Wilkerson struck out and Steven Duggar grounded to third, Garrett Boulware followed with a single that ricocheted off the third baseman’s glove, trickling into left field. Gibson was able to speed around the bases scoring from second.
Clemson expanded the lead in the three-run fourth inning. Shane Kennedy drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Jon McGibbon’s single. Tyler Krieger grounded into a fielder’s choice that plated Kennedy. Thomas Brittle walked and Mike Triller’s double to left field scored Krieger and Brittle which extended the lead to 4-0.
After the Tigers picked up another run in the fifth inning, Georgia Southern (25-24) responded with their first run of the night in the top of the sixth. Scooter Williams was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Ben Morgan followed with a single to center that scored Williams. Morgan was picked off on the next play.
After Clemson padded their lead to 7-1, Georgia Southern threatened to cut into the lead in the top of the eighth. After Gossett recorded his twelfth strikeout he was replaced by LHP Joseph Moorefield who walked consecutive batters to load the bases. Matt Campbell relieved Moorefield and recorded the next two outs to dispel the Eagle threat.
In addition to his season-high twelve strikeouts, Gossett (8-3) only allowed two hits and two walks lowering his ERA to 2.27. Georgia Southern starter Justin Hess (4-5) allowed five earned runs and walked seven.
Boulware, Kennedy, and Triller each had two hits apiece for the Tigers. Triller started in left field in place of Tyler Slaton.
The Tigers will return to action 6:30 Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium for the second game in the three game series against the Eagles. Freshman LHP Matthew Crownover (6-1) will take the mound against Georgia Southern LHP Jason Richman (4-3).
