Clemson whips NC State

Boulware blasts two homers

Raleigh, NC- Catcher Garret Boulware blasted two home runs and starting pitcher Daniel Gossett pitched 6.2 innings allowing 2 earned runs as the Tigers defeated the Wolfpack Friday afternoon at Doak Field.

The Wolfpack (11-3, 0-1) built a 4-0 lead after the first three innings thanks to some sloppy defense by the Tigers, but the Tigers (8-4, 1-0) came roaring back in the top of the fourth inning. Steve Wilkerson struck out to begin the inning before Shane Kennedy walked. Steven Duggar was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced after a failed pick-off attempt by NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon. Boulware then singled to center driving in Kennedy and advancing Duggar to third.

John McGibbon follows with a single to right plating Duggar while Boulware advances to second. Krieger singles to right allowing both runners to advance a base leaving the bases loaded for Maleke Gibson. Gibson scores another run on a fielder’s choice to the second basemen. Brittle fouls out to end the inning, but not before the Tigers cut the lead to 4-3.
The Tigers were able to capture the lead for good after Garrett Boulware’s three-run homerun in the Tigers five-run fifth inning. Boulware finished the day 4-5 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. Boulware hit his second homer in the ninth inning.

Tigers ace Daniel Gossett (2-1) finished his outing allowing four runs, but only two earned and had nine strikeouts.

NC State lefty Carlos Rodon (1-2) was hit hard for eight earned runs in only 4.1 innings, but finished with eight strikeouts. Rodon is considered by many MLB scouts to be a first round pick in the 2014 Draft.

The Tigers anemic offense has had trouble scoring particularly against left-handed pitching, but that trend was not evident Friday afternoon.

NC State DH Will Nance opened scoring with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning. Shortstop Trea Turner added to the Pack lead with a solo shot to begin the bottom of the third inning, his fifth of the year.

The Tigers and the Wolfpack will play Game 2 of their weekend series Saturday afternoon at 4 PM.
