Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s unanimous No. 1 prospect, pulled off a shocker Thursday, committing to Clemson during an unofficial visit, per a source.
Nkemdiche (Grayson/Loganville, Ga.) was widely considered an Alabama-LSU battle, with the Tigers, Ole Miss and Mississippi State among the fringe contenders.
But Nkemdiche pledged Clemson in the middle of a three-day visit to campus.
A day earlier, his close friend, defensive back David Kamara, committed to Clemson – the team’s second pledge from Grayson. Four-star running back Wayne Gallman committed earlier this spring.
Clemson also has some connection to Grayson in that coach Dabo Swinney was a college teammate and road roommate with the prospects’ high school coach, Mickey Conn.
Nkemdiche carries a 103 rating as the premier five-star prospect in the country.
His commitment gives Clemson eight for its 2013 class and elevated the Tigers from No. 36 to No. 30 in the 247Sports team rankings.
