2013 LB group

  • Next year we return 2 seniors 5 juniors 1 sophmore and 1 freshemn and we currently have two commited for the 2013 class. That being said we bring back just 3 with major playing time. To me this group has been mismanaged and atleast two of those juniors should have been redshirted last year.
What we have available next year
    Q. Christian sr 6'2 220
    S. Shuey sr 6'3 250
    S. Anthony jr 6'3 220
    T. Steward jr 6'2 235
    L. Townsend jr 6'2 210
    K. Jones jr 6'1 215
    J. Parker jr 6'1 225
    BJ. Goodson rso 6'1 225
    TJ. Burrell rfr 5'11 210

    2013 commitments
    D. Odaniel 6'1 205
    B. Boulware 6'1 230

This is one of the positions on the team that has "sec" and nfl type players on it, but we MUST better develop them. I think we all know what that means so I wont beat a dead horse.

We return 3 players who had major contributions in q.christian, shuey and anthony, of the three I dont trust christian at all. I feel too many times he was a liability. I would like to see Anthony moved to his spot to give that poition a more consistent player. Anthony IMO is better suited to play outside, it just seems more natural for him. Shuey was a HUGE spark in the middle for us and upon his insertion we became MUCH better at stopping the run. Kellen jones is expected to give him all he can handle next year for that spot and probably will overtake him, if everything we hear about him is true.

IMO Steward along with Lateek should have been redshirted. Steward was not ready to play and Lateek isnt ready to contribute and both IMO wasted a year on speacial teams. At least one of them should have been anyway. Steward has all the makings of being a bigtime lb at the will backer spot if hes back to 100% nxt year. Lateek is a freak athlete and is struggling to get a playbook down since hes never had one before. He is the type that can give us big plays behind the LOS and get to the qb in a hurry..we really need him to get on the field because he can be a big impact player.

Regarding justin parker, I hope he can develop and be a good backup at the will backer spot. I have wondered if DE isnt a better option for him, but sure hope he can contribute for us nxt year somewhere.I really liked the BJ Goodson pick up, I think down the road he is going to make one hell of a Mike backer. Tj Burrell, not sure where he fits in this mix maybe a nickel guy who knows.Hopefully we redshirt both incoming LBs, I really like both and think both will be big contributors down the road.

Allin all I like this group but we will have to bring in a lot more LBs in the 14 class to off set the 5 srs we will have that year. I think this group is one of the most talented on the roster and I love the potential there. I

  • I agree the linebackers can be a real strength of the Clemson defense next year. Kellen Jones has the potential to be a game changer. He's a guy I am looking forward to seeing next year.

Me to, we need a guy that the offense has to gameplan arround. I think we will be good at stopping the run and if we can develop a consistent pass rush, the front 7 can be very good.

  • I think defensive line and linebackers could be a strength next year, but development is the key.

I to am excited about Kellen Jones.....

Exactly, 2 years ago on signing day, it was a clemson football commercial....those guys must become players and impact players at that

  • I think you'll see Anthony slide into the Will spot and be a good player there. Mike will probably be Jones/Shuey, and SAM will be Christian baring someone from the rest of the group stepping forward. I actually thought Christian played a little better late in the season this year. Amazing what some coaching can do for a kid.

Where would you put steward....imo stewards gotta get on the field

  • I'm excited for this group, and their growth under (hopefully) another year of Venables' teachings. I would like to see Anthony, Jones, and Steward out there, because that would affirm that there is progress being made in developing these big-time LB prospects. Regardless of who starts where, it's nice to see some solid depth back at LB at CU.

I think it all depends on Steward's health. Will he regain the speed and ability to redirect he had when he was recruited? If so he could be a force and vie for playing time at either Mike or Will. At this point I think Anthony, Jones and Shuey would all be ahead of him at those positions though.

I know venables plays a good bit of nickel, but do you not think steward could play the sam and be more productive. I sure hope steward comes back to a 100%.

  • No...I don't see him in the SAM role at all. Now that I think about it Anthony might move over to SAM opening up the WILL for Steward, but again it just depends on how he's moving around. I think they have to know what Steward's prospects are before they decide where to put Anthony. If Steward is still scuffling with his movement skills this spring I think Anthony and Christian start on the outside.

  • Lol meant to say anthony at sam....like in my write up. If steward is back to full go and both and him and anthony start on the outside wonder if parker can give the team solid reps at the backup will

    jvtiger77

  • Count me as skeptical that Steward is ever anything except a role player.
