  • Am I reading this right? Swofford is suggesting 4 conference champions should be in? Wouldn't that leave ACC out with SEC, BIG12, B1G, Pac12 likely having priority? Is he digging his own grave?

I know. The SEC champ could have 8 losses, and they're still getting in. A Pac 12 champ would have to have a few losses, and the ACC Champ would have to probably be undefeated for us to take a spot from one of the big 4 power conferences.

  • In my opinion, Swofford knows the the 4 team playoff is imminent. Even he knows that two conferences and Notre Dame will be left out in this equation. However, what I believe he is trying to do, is prevent the selection committee model from happening. In this case, the ACC & Big East would surely be cut out of the playoffs. So in essence, he believes that this still gives the ACC some sort of chance.

  • I feel like no matter how you split it as long as the playoff number is 4 which it is 99.99999999999% certain to be, the ACC is gonna get boned. with Conf. Champs Model it is likely we will be Champ # 5 most years. With a Top 4 Rated Model it is like the ACC Champ comes in around 7-8 yearly sure maybe 1 in 7 years the ACC will have someone go through with 0 or 1 loss and find a way in, but a 2 or 3 loss ACC team will never make it. And an ACC team with the same record as a Big10, Big12, or SEC team will get passed over for that team, in most years would a 1 loss ACC Champ get in over a no loss Big East Boise State? probably not imo.

imo selection committee is barely any different from what we have, just with more participants. both are based on subjective rankings.

posted before reading full post, but i will add this:

i don't think an ACC champ with 2-3 losses is getting 'boned' by being left out of the playoff. that team unequivocally doesn't deserve a shot.

Ah I see. Makes sense that way. Still would likely leave ACC at #5 and out most years I would bet.

  • You also have to be ranked in the top 6 in the polls as well.

Of course voters effect the polls under the current format. However, a selection committed will have a lot more influence over the who gets to the participate in the playoffs - a lot more.

that wasn't what I was implying, those were two separate items. I was saying that no matter which model is chosen it will not favor the ACC. Sorry if that was confusing.

oh. well i'm not expecting any model to "favor" the ACC.

selection committee is no different from the polls. that is my point. it's still subjective and will yield basically the same results. the selection committee will usually choose the same 4 teams who would have been top 4 in bcs rankings, or at least 3 of the top 4.
