I pondered a few ways to go with this in a column, but never strung together anything concrete.
But has it reached the point where we can debate whether Chad Morris is better with the Gus Malzahn offense than Gus?
I think Morris is a better play caller. He makes teams pay for their tendencies at the most opportune times.
He definitely wants to run the ball more it seems, at least when you hear him speak about it
I think they are very similar. Gus went to Ark. out of High School and put up big numbers there. They had similar numbers when each was at Tulsa. Gus had Newton, and he called plays around him brilliantly. Chad has the luxury of Boyd, Sammy, Nuk, etc....
Offenses evolve over time. When Gus was at Shiloh, then at Tulsa, he was big on the screen game and misdirection. I think is going back to alot of that now that he's at Ark. St. At AU, he didn't have to screen as much, or always get a numbers advantage to run the ball.
I think Chad has evolved from what Gus was, and really added more of a downfield passing game and taken the tempo to a different level.
I thought Gus was the best OC in college football before Chad came on the scene. I now think they are the two best in the game.
The Chad is a better OC IMO. It's more than just having a scheme. It's knowing how to utilize it to attack a defenses weaknesses. Or knowing how to call plays based on what the defense is giving you. But more than that, it's being able to coach he suitm to he players and demanding they do it well. This is here I think Chad Morris is better.
Chad Morris and Chip Kelly are the top 2 offensive caches in college football. Petrine is up there too but who knows why happens next with him.
I think Malzahn is close. I think the Chad is a better play caller.
Chizik may regret Malzahn being gone at the end of this season.
I think he likely regrets it now.
I think Morris has tweaked his system a bit to be more driven by power running than Gus is. I don't think we saw that last year because we weren't capable of it, but it's what he wants to do. I think the Pistol is the perfect fit, and we haven't really seen it's full effect yet, because Sammy will take the play-action game to a different level.
Honestly, I think Chad is much better than Gus. As far as Auburn, I like Loeffler, I think Auburn fans are expecting too much. Auburn has recruited to Gus' system and now they're going more pro style. Frazier needs work but if you're an Auburn fan, what did you expect?
Not gonna lie, I am a lil worried about Clemson, as now, how good does our Auburn victory look? I do think Clemson is a good team but Im a lil worried rolling into Tallahassee next week.
I think Malzahn leaving will one day be looked at as a huge mistake.
Malzahn wasn't the problem last year it was Roof and always was Roof.

I coached a kid who was very close to the Malzhan family (before he got to AU). I can't confirm this, but I would not be surprised if Gus left b/c of "dealings" going on at AU. AU is is worse shape w/o him, than vice-versa.
If I'm Arky.. I'm going after Gus at the end of this season.
I think Morris is much more innovative and willing to continue learning the system. It seems like he's taken it to another level from what Malzahn did.
