I will preface this by saying that I am one of the Clemson to the Big 12 people. But I do not see the Notre Dame to Big12 rumors having any legs at all. First reason is I dont think that the AD has that much power especially since none of there sports programs have been relevant in years. Since they are a private school, I am not sure how they are structured, but their president sees them rightfully so as a great academic institution. I do not see him putting them in a conference with anyone but the ACC. Matter of fact, I do not see him doing that either. I really do not see money being Notre Dames' motivation at all. When all is said and done, I see them remaining independent. I just wonder what the board thinks. By the way, I have enjoyed reading the post on this board. You guys are good.
There is some truth to your thinking in my opinion. Really, the only thing that the Big 12 has going in its favor is the 3rd tier rights issue. I'm not sure how big that is in Notre Dame's thinking. When you think about it though, does Notre Dame in the same conference as Iowa State, Kansas, Texas Tech, Ok State really.......fit? Does Notre Dame fit with schools like BC, Pitt, UNC, Duke, Wake, Maryland, UVA? Absolutely.
While academics shouldn't matter in an "ATHLETIC CONFERENCE", I doubt many university presidents feel that way.
Yeah, they probably will remain independent, but Notre Dame and the Big 12 just seem like strange bedfellows. Clemson and FSU fit more in with the Big 12 brand than Notre Dame. The only thing that makes us an oddity is our distance from the core of the conference.
ND is taking the best deal back to NBC for more money. However, if they were one day forced to join a conference b/c of the benefits and playoff system, there is no doubt the B12 would have the edge simply b/c of Tier 3.
Also, keep in mind that an ACC void of FSU becomes MUCH LESS appealing to ND football.
ND won''t join any conference so long as they don't have to join one, and right now it appears they don't need to join to get into the football playoff.
Coach rob is right, they're just flirting with these conferences to gin up more money from NBC.

FSU isn't going anywhere, and ND isn't going to the Big 12. If ND ever decided to join the ACC, the deal would be renegotiated and we'd get the tier 3 rights back.
Keep dreaming... No way ND takes less money to join the ACC in all sports.
I think there is a multitude of odd info out there right now. It seems to be all coming from Texas and WV
Do you know if WVU has already signed away their rights? It appears that the Big 12 schools have not signed their new deal yet and I read somewhere that Texas has not signed the new 13 year Grant-in-rights...
If WVU has not signed it yet, the ACC would seem to have one last chance to make a run at them... I know that academic bastions like UNCheat can't fathom the idea of an open enrollment school in the ACC. However, that may look more appealing right now if they really do think FSU and Clemson may bolt...
I will make a couple calls and try to verify if they have or haven't.
Thanks. I would assume they have signed something at this point since they are set to enter on Sunday and play ball there this year.
My assumption is that all schools have signed the current 6 year GOR in the Big XII. I would think WVU's goes into effect on July 1.
I don't know if that means they can get out of it before then, but I would think they would have already signed it, and it has to go into effect when they officially join.
I don't see Ollie Luck leading WVU to the ACC after Swofford pretty much gave him the middle finger.
I believe I saw one of the WVU folks chimed in last week and said they did sign hey GOR. Still, I think its a moot point because they aren't going anywhere.
Kinda funny that roles seem to have reversed from last year when the WVU was begging us (or anyone) to take them. Now, we're the ones needing them. Irony aside ... Why would WVU join a conference that denied them last year??? It's like the girl in school who wouldn't date you when you had braces, and then begged to go out with you when you got those suckers off.
