***BOT meeting starts 10 am this morning***
Swinney's latest rant, where he called out bloggers and undermined the authority of university administrators and the Board of Trustees, is yet another example where he chose to use 1,000 words when 10 would have sufficed. A head coach calling out bloggers? Rabbit ears anyone?
You might recall he has gone o the pulpit before to castigate internet message boards as "the devil's playground" and characterized last season's ACC Championship as only for those he deemed "all in".
What Swinney still fails to realize is spouting off opinions on the various groups of fans and media are doing nothing but dividing an already fragile fan base, many who see this latest outburst as yet another example of their coach talking too much and generally coming across as foolish and immature. This is especially true when the spotlight today is clearly was supposed to be for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp not Dabo Swinney.
One might point out that every elite program nationally recruits. Locally you could point to the national recruiting of incoming freshman QB Chad Kelly from Buffalo NY, QB Cole Stoudt from Dublin OH or perhaps Tajh Boyd from Tidewater Va which is no short drive to Clemson. In fact Tajh Boyd had narrowed his list to Oregon, Ohio State and Clemson. He was an Oregon lean for some time but ultimately came to Clemson. Let's go old school what about former Clemson player and video grad asst Brandon Streeter from Gettysburg Pa? I for one am glad Clemson went outside their footprint for these kids.
WR Keenan Allen from Greensboro, NC ultimately flew over Clemson 2000 miles for Cal. Alabama gets Mark Ingram from Michigan and a national championship and a Heisman. UGA's best stretch in a long time came with QB Matthew Stafford from Texas and RB Knowshon Moreno from NJ. The point? Kids go where they are recruited, where they fit, where they can win and where they can be groomed for the NFL.
FWIW I've been told tonight that Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney may not be on the call tomorrow night with the BOT. There is information now that he may actually be on the call before his camp.
Comments from Clemson's BOT Chairman David Wilkins two weeks ago from David Hood of Tigernet.
"This board is very committed to Clemson athletics and Clemson sports. We want Clemson teams to be the best they can be," "We are very interested in a football program that is excelling at a high level, and we would consider, as we should, any viable option from any conference if we received any. We have not received any."
"If we were contacted by a conference, we would obviously listen to what they had to say," Wilkins said. "And then we would make a reasonable decision. We aren't seeking that, and we aren't making any overtures about that. I think we have a responsibility to consider any viable component that would come our way. But we haven't been contacted by anybody."
