Fravel: The way I see it

My take on where Clemson stands in recruiting and with the upcoming bowl game against LSU.

  • Hate to say this, but I just don't get a good feeling about the bowl game or recruiting right now... Too many distractions on the team with coaches leaving, not leaving, rumors, etc.... Just don't think the team is in the right frame of mind and they aren't prepared for what LSU is going to do... Even with a 10 win season, it just feels like we might as well have finished 8-4 b/c we couldn't win the big games against quality opponents

One of points is this game is huge for the momentum of Clemson football. A win against LSU would really go a long way.

  • I agree, a must win for momentum and national perception. That said, I think we get stomped into a mud puddle. I've lost my confidence. Next year should be the high water mark for Dabo. He's got to make it all come together. If he doesn't, the hot seat comes on full bore.

And you honestly think we can move the ball against LSU's defense after yet another offensive meltdown against SCar? Sorry, i'm not as optimistic... Dabo will find a way to meddle with the game plan and screw things up

  • I have no faith that we can beat LSU...Now jaw jaw nxt year yes, I think we beat that overrated bunch

  • Great article, Cory. The national perception of Clemson is that we can't play against the big boys, and honestly, that's the reality of the situation. Can you imagine what three straight wins against South Carolina, LSU, and Georgia would do for this program? Going 2-1 in that stretch isn't too shabby either. If we get blown out in the Georgia Dome, it's going to be a rough off season.

First- my point is that I think this game is a must win for Clemson in a lot of ways.

Do I think Clemson can move the ball? Yes, early in the game. I think LSU will adjust to the speed and yards will be hard to come by as the game goes on.

I think LSU will try to bludgeon Clemson and impose it's will on the lines of scrimmage. LSU will try to eat up clock and run the ball with their stable of running backs and big offensive line.

  • You know I don't usually put a lot of stock in bowl games because there are usually a lot of variables in play and you never know what a team's mental makeup is going to be. However, I agree this is a HUGE game for Clemson. Look we've really beaten no one all season, and with the way USC came into Death Valley this year and won with a freaking backup QB that no one wanted just created a ton of heartburn. Add to that the embarrassing loss against West Virginia, and this fan base is ready to beat someone of substance. Lose this game and the SEC crowd just keeps piling on, and recruiting that is already taking on water may suffer a few more setbacks. On top of that, no one seems to feel real good about this game because LSU is a better team, and our team has been distracted by the Morris stuff and Bryant's suspension. Maybe things aren't as bleak as I see them right now, as there are still a lot of positives, but it's hard to say things are looking all that great either.

Even with the second half exactly as it was, we beat USCe comfortably if we take advantage of our first half opportunities. I think you are right, the same possibility exists with LSU. Have to score all we can early and hang on.

Three straight wins would have done wonders for this program's perception nationally. But make no mistake, beating LSU will have a major - MAJOR - impact on it as well.

  • I think Clemson's best chance to win comes down to this: LSU. If LSU comes in flat, Clemson CAN beat them. If LSU shows up, I think they destroy us. Clemson will get pushed around on the inside, and they will run it over and over again. Then they will air it out to make it worse. I think we could get embarrassed.

    blue_62

  • LSU was down by 2 TD's to A&M and still won, this is gonna hurt for Clemson IMO. You never know though, that's why the game is played on the field and not on paper.

It's all about the Orange and Blue.

    And Auburn.

    blue_62

  • Cory, I agree totally with your take on things. Its not our offense, coaches, uniforms people think of. Its the "perception" that Clemson can not win the tough, physical, big game. Danny Ford made his name and built Clemsons reputation by winning the big games. The perception of Clemson was hard nosed, smash mouth, we are tougher than you football. When you line up and beat the Oklahoms, Nebraskas, Penn States, you are considered one of the baddest men on the block! The world will not end if we lose to LSU... but Dabo may think it did during the off season!

That's right Blue. LSU was really flat that night. Made a lot of mistakes. Arguably the best game that Auburn played all year. They scored 12 points I believe.

I agree, but they have played very different in the back half of the season. That running game is ridiculous, and they have like 5 RB's that would start at other schools. Crazy!

I also read that they are getting some key players back for the bowl game. I believe they are players on the OL and a LB. In other words, the LSU we face should be IMPROVED from where they were during the season. Clemson could be in for a serious beatdown if LSU shows up ready to play. I will be shocked if we stand toe to toe with those guys.

    blue_62

  • I think our DL will be up for a fight...those guys dont tuck their tails and run....i like the effort they give. Our ol on the other hand ...who knows what unit shows up.
