Question for the Mods on Clemson re: expansion

  • Whoever wants to answer, I would appreciate it. From what y'all are hearing, who are the big players at Clemson, be it in the AD, coaching ranks, Admin or BOT who are fighting against the Big 12 move? What arguments are they making?

I've seen it mentioned that this will not be a "President Barker" decision. However, while he may not have an actual vote, is he being vocal about not wanting to move?

I would like to know what info there is on the the internal decision points that Clemson is discussing.

    Thanks gents.

  • These type of decisions are made by BOT and aided by the AD and intermediaries. Other than fans arguing travel, geography etc I have heard nothing about arguments.

Most don't understand at all how expansion works. We've done everything to educate folks on this.

This board is very knowledgable and well versed in expansion.

This decision would be about $$$$, conference affiliation and making a seat at the BCS table for Clemson.

This decision will not be made by Barker.

  • The playoff model that will be announced in June will either be:

    A.) the 4 best teams

    or

B.) A hybrid of a few conference champs and one highly ranked non conf champ

Once the plan is in stone, it will be all that the pro-expansion forces at Clemson need to seal the deal. Strength of schedule will be HUGE in either plan and that favors the Big 12 in a huge way.

Just look at the SOS from Sagarin http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt11.htm :
Okie State - 3rd hardest schedule
    OU - 6th hardest schedule
    Texas - 5th hardest schedule

ACC champ Clemson - 43rd hardest schedule
    FSU - 68th hardest schedule

No reasonable person would think that, with a hybrid plan, the ACC champ would regularly be one of the top 3 highest ranked conference champs.

If you want a consistent seat at the 4 team playoff, under either plan, you need to be in the Big 12.

  • Isn't strength of schedule part of the BCS formula for rankings now?

No it's not. The BCS's view point is that strength of scheduled is considered by each human that has a vote in the polls that are tied into the BCS.
