The effect Dooley's firing may have on Clemson

  • Last week, at the Clemson vs. Maryland game, several other members of the media in the press box and I were discussing the Tennessee head coaching position that we all knew would eventually become vacant (and now has become official).

While no one knows for sure who will be the next head coach at Rocky Top, several of us agreed that two hirings could directly affect Clemson.

It's unlikely that Chad Morris would leave Clemson this offseason for a head coaching job because he knows what Clemson brings back offensively next season. To put it lightly, if the Tigers are going to win a national championship, 2013 looks like the best chance of doing so.

There are two possible exceptions though.

If Tennessee hires Tommy Tuberville or Art Briles, we all agreed that Morris MIGHT consider going back home to Texas to become the next head coach at Texas Tech or Baylor.

Obviously this all speculation, and we do not know if TT or AB would want the job in Knoxville or are even being considered for it, but it's an interesting topic worth discussing.

    Would Morris leave?

    What are your thoughts?

  • Vols AD Dave Hart said HC experience will be one thing they want this time.

FWIW, though, I don't believe Tennessee is a program any assistant would pass up

  • There was talk that Fedora might be a candidate.

Exactly...which is why Tommy Tuberville and Art Briles might be candidates, especially Tuberville. He had a winning record at not one, but two SEC schools. If he goes to Knoxville, Morris may go to Texas Tech.

You're also assuming TT would automatically have Morris at the top of the list. I'm not necessarily sure that is the case. I also personally believe Tennessee wants a bigger name than Tuberville and certainly bigger than Briles.

I'd be more nervous about Arky hiring Tuberville than Tennessee.

  • Right now, word from a Tennessee insider is that the following are the top candidates:

    1. John Gruden
    2. Kirby Smart
    3. Charlie Strong
    4. Jimbo Fisher
    5. Al Golden
    6. Gary Patterson
    7. Dan Mullen

Even if Tuberville ended up at UT, I wouldn't be to worried about Morris bolting for Texas Tech.

  • I've also heard Tennessee is looking at prove commodities either from pro ball or the SEC, and that fits with what Ryan is saying in this thread. However, with some high profile NFL jobs likely coming open (PHI, DAL and SD all have ben rumored), along with KC, CLE and a few others, Gruden surely has his eyes on those and may be floating these college rumors to drive his price up. I think dave Hart is intrigued by Kirby Smart but probably feels he has to go after someone who's accomplished, and I don't blame him. Dooley was in over his head and Kiffin was a joke, so they need a safe hire.

I think there are at least 3 SEC programs that would love Bobby Petrino, but he has so much stench on him he may have to go to a South Florida or Purdue to get his feet back on the ground.

At one time I thought Briles and Tubbs would likely move on, but Baylor is just 5-5 in the post RGIII era and people are probably watching to see how he handles his business without a program changer like that. Tubbs has always been one to link himself to every opening there is, so you never know what to believe with his rumors. I think he'd give his left nut to get Arkansas, but they probably want someone splashier there too, at least that's what they'll try and get before they settle. As a result, there may not be a Texas opening for Morris this season, but there could be after 2013 perhaps.

No idea what Auburn may do but Jimbo Fisher is probably an intriguing candidate.

I think Charley Strong might wind up in Tennessee or Arkansas when all is said and done.
