The rise of SC athletics over Clemson. Discuss

  • Aaron Burr Cock said...

from a sc perspective its the sec first, the sec second and sec third, all medals

we suffered at first, but now, with our facilities up to par we have much to offer student athletes. so does clemson but a lot of baseball and football players lust after the sec. like great hoops players want to go to the acc or big east or one of the premier hoops leagues

and, in baseball, honestly, how can clemson let us recruit kids like scott wingo and the pitcher jordan, and others, kids with clemson backgrounds? i think your recruiting has overlooked some talent in state, now this is hurting clemson, imho.

scott wingo was not a great player at first, but by his senior year.....well, all i can say is scott wingo on clemson would have been a better clemson team.

but, you cant recruit everybody, i know. but dont ignore tradition either

The back story of Scott Wingo as a could have been - should have been a legacy player for clemson was highlighted numerous times during most every broadcast of the rivalry game and in the CWS broadcast. Hind sight is always 20/20.

I'm reminded of the Outback Bowl against ohio state back in 2001. Ryan Brewer, Ohio's Mr. Football, who was shunned by the state school as not good enough or big enough for their team had an exceptionally memorable day as he was voted the game's most valuable player ... pay back's a bitch.

So did Jamie Moyer, Glavine, etc...And Glavine won 300 games. Im not here to start controversy, Im just unsure if "absolute garbage" is a good thing or bad. He keeps hitters off balance and hits his spots and those are the keys to success on the bump. Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying he'll be a hall of famer, but his style of pitching can make you a lot of money.

I will eat crow if I'm wrong, but I think Roth will have a very minimal level of success at the next level. I just can't see him making it even to AAA.

Whether or not Roth has any success in the pros will of course be seen. Quite frankly, I could care less. What I do care about, and what we 'know', is that he has owned Clemson baseball. banghead

scott wingo turned out to be a solid player for one year, but if he would have made clemson better, it would have been by changing positions or from the bench. clemson had a better 2B in mike freeman. he wouldn't have moved to short, because he wouldn't have played over brad miller. more or less a wash with john hinson at 3rd. i don't know if he could have played in the OF.

jordan montgomery is a head scratcher considering how bad our pitching staff has been for the last couple of years.

  • DVs are part of the game - no problem, no argument. If you disagree, clarification would be helpful.

A DV with no explanation makes it difficult to provide meaningful debate, discussion, or disagreement.

If I misspoke, let me know with a little more specificity. Tell me where I was wrong.

I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks.

I agree, Pro Baseball in general is extremly tough for anyone to succeed, especially an american kid with a fastball that tops out in the high 80's. Thankfully, as with Pohl, not only are they excellent players, they are also excellent students, as in Academic All-Americans. So they will be successful in life wherever they may end up, and that, my Clemson Foes, is a good thing for everyone!

    Dems fightin words McCoy....

Losing your job is bad luck (or in Roth's dads case, a love of your son and wanting to watch him play on the biggest stage of his life), beating your girlfriend with a towel rod is trash, lets' get that cleared up and we can go from there.

who cares the reason? he should have been at work. the roths, like joe craig, were trash before, during, and after their incidents. roth will probably get a cushy job from a scar fan because of his athletic success, but he'll always be trash with a hemp necklace who takes baths with dudes.

WOW, I have seen it all now, comparing Michael Roth to Joe Craig….Jack Leggett... is that you?? I realize you are upset because your Grandfather got fired and your dad is pitching against Oklahoma next weekend, but no reason to compare those two, come on man have a heart!!

Down Vote - the little arows to the right of the comment box.

It allows every viewer to pretend for the moment they are Caesar.

I'm just saying if you or someone feels the comment deserves a down vote it would be useful for the process to explain or clarify.

  • Not sure where you are finding the information that Jordan Montgomery has a clemson background? I mean, I could be wrong, but I went to undergrad and was friends with his older brother, and they were pretty big USC fans.

(Edit: just read where someone on tigernet said his dad pitched at clemson. I never knew that. Interesting.)

Cannot overlook the junk thrown by Hoyt Wilheim, Joe and Phil Niekro.

A couple of pretty decent pitcher who extended their careers and frustrated hitters well into their 40's, not with blazing speed but with a lack of it.

Baseball needs more talent. When you have less talent the coaching better be good. Football has the talent. Development is an issue in my opinion.

If Roth never pitches a game professionally he'll have at least two national championship rings, the Boyd McWhorter Award as the SEC's premier male scholar athlete and a magna cum laude degree from the nation's number one International Business program.

Not to mention the fun of sending the taters home from Omaha with their tails between their legs. Of course when a "school" has the distinction of the most trips to the College World Series without ever reaching the finals, like clemson, that's something many pitchers have on their resume.

Oh yeah, he never beat the hell out of his girlfriend with a towel rod, or got likkered up and killed a track coach with a Sea Do either.

  • Seems as though someone really enjoys their Cesarean complex - How 'bout that - used all of their down votes in one afternoon. I guess they see them self sort of like Oz.

I AM OZ.... the Great and Powerful!....Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! The Great Oz has spoken.

  • Silly Taters. You just aren't a rival to us anymore.....in any sport.

and he'd still be trash, who came from trash, and will bear trash children. good for him.

and haha at touting your #1 international business graduate program. something touted only by people without graduate degrees.

scott wingo was & is a leader. and if you had a better second baseman, congrats, cause for four years he was flat out sensational. as a freshman he could not hit, but would get on base one way or the other

there was another kid with clemson ties a few years back a curve ball pitcher, cant recall his name, but all in all, clemson has gotten out recruited in state, imho. i know we depend on walker, bradley and others so its not as easy as just get the best sc kids

but, somehow i think your focus has overlooked some good stuff locally

I can certainly appreciate cheering for the home team and booing the opponents but I’m having a difficult time understanding the hate you’re spewing towards a college baseball player.

Did I miss something in the back story – did he have some run in with the police or make some hateful remarks about Clemson? So you have a beef with his dad – fine – why is it necessary to bash the kid?

For what it’s worth, he represents all that’s good about sportsmanship and student athletics. His academic and athletic accolades speak well of him and his university.

I don’t feel it important or relevant to reference his accomplishments against any one team other than to say he is a member of a two time national championship team and he was a team player.

You, on the other hand, represent that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
